Club Report Number One

Zanshin Shotokan Karate Club Report January – Feburary 2014

Every month I have to send a report of the recent months events to the Coleraine Sports Council. I will then upload them to this page also to let the parents and students have a read. Maybe you may see that the club does more during one month than you actually realise!

The clubs year ended on a high, with the 1st Karate NI championships being held in Carryduff in November 2013, ZSNI is now proud to state that we have several Northern Ireland Champions such as Zachary Geddis and two Northern Ireland Grand Champions, Andrew Mills and Dylan McCloskey (Coleraine junior sports man of the year).

December held our annual ZSNI National Championships and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the Jim Watt Sports Centre in Garvagh for the use of their facilities on this date. It remained a success with over 100 of our students competing on the day. This competition marks our Annual Awards Ceremony, which the coveted awards of Junior and Senior Student of the year are presented, this year’s winners were: Junior- Kevin Diamond Senior: Andrew Mills.

January 28th -  the WUKF World Open Championships were held  in Munich, Germany, where Andrew Mills (20) was chosen to compete in after his outstanding performance at the Karate NI championships in Carryduff, Zachary Geddis was also chosen but had to refrain from competing due to injury. Andrew returned home to Northern Ireland as double World Junior Open Champion, and World no.3 in Kumite (free sparring) Senior Champion. The club are very proud of Andrew on this occasion.

Whilst Andrew was away competing, his team mate Aidan O’Boyle was attending the Junior English Squad Session in the legendary Liverpool Red Triangle; this training session is regarded (by other students who have attended) as the most intense three hours of a karateka’s squad experience. Aidan completed this session with a broken thumb and a cast on up to his elbow!

Also during this weekend the first ZSNI standardisation course was held in the Jim Watt Sports Centre, which brought over 100 students in to prepare them for their grading the following weekend.

The first grading of the year was scheduled for Saturday 1st February in Greenvale Leisure Centre Magherafelt with Sensei F. Brennan 7th Dan KUGB. As this grading is early in the year, it means our students do not get much of a Christmas break, but this did not deter them. With over 80 students completing the 9 o’clock training session and 89 students grading throughout the rest of the day, it proved a success.

ZSNI is now preparing for its 10th Riverside Theatre Demonstration on Saturday 22nd March.
